FLORA

Bearded Iris

Oriental Poppies Foxglove
Everyone seems to be cheered by the colour and form of flowers!
But whereas a garden or cut bloom has a limited time before fading, a painting of your favourite one can last indefinitely!
The shades, shapes and symmetry in nature leaves us in awe, and painters have always loved the challenge of copying what they see. I don't know of one artist that can paint the scent, but the imagination can powerfully dovetail with the eyes in bringing the whole feel together.
I enjoy trying to capture flowers in TWO ways: the more botanical and "realistic" approach where even the fragility of the petal's texture is key, as well as the more spontaneous, even "quirky" approach that can denote movement in stillness. You will find more examples of flora in the "Pastels," "Pen & Ink" and "Miscellaneous" pages.
